The electric motor is the same as it had before, but Volkswagen has made a series of changes for the power to increase up to 136 horses and torque up to 290 Nm (20 hp and 20 Nm more than before). The battery, located under the tunnel that runs along the body and behind the rear seats, is still lithium-ion, but now has 35.8 kWh of gross capacity (24.2 kWh in the 2014 model), which allows An autonomy of 300 km according to NEDC regulations (190 in the previous model) and about 200 km under conventional traffic conditions. According to Volkswagen, a full charge on a 7.2 kW Wallbox (requires installation by a professional) takes less than six hours.
The autonomy of the e-Golf 2017 is higher than the Nissan LEAF (up to 250 km) and the KIA Soul EV (212 km), identical to the BMW i3 94 Ah (300 km) and lower than the Renault ZOE 40 kWh (400 km). The increase in engine power results in an acceleration of 0 to 100 km / h (9.6 seconds versus 10.4) and an increase in maximum speed (150 km / h versus 140 km / H) compared to the previous model.
As in the rest of the Golf 2017 range, the e-Golf will have a large number of systems of driving aids, such as emergency braking with pedestrian detection an active developer of speed with automatic start and stop in jams (works up to 60 km / h), the detector of objects in the blind spot or alert involuntary change lanes. Optionally, it is also possible to opt for an all-digital 12.3-inch instrument cluster that Volkswagen calls "Digital Cockpit" and several multimedia systems with larger screens than the previous model. The most complete system, called "Discover Pro", has a screen of 9.2 inches with a result of 1280x640 pixels and the ability to handle it with gestures.
In the e-Golf are also new bumpers, headlights and pilots, which in both cases perform their functions through ledes. Inside is different upholstery.
